What’s the Difference Between Residential and Commercial Surveying?

Surveying services are necessary for any type of major project regarding property, such as construction and sales. However, not every type of survey is performed in the same way. For example, residential and commercial surveying, although they share some similarities, are different services for a few reasons. But what exactly are these differences?

What’s the Difference Between Residential and Commercial Surveying?

For one, commercial surveying is typically more extensive than residential surveying. Any decision regarding a commercial property usually affects a larger and more complex area of land that can be more difficult to scope out. Commercial property owners also typically want more information than residential property owners. Most of the time, residential property owners just want to know what the exact boundaries of the property are. However, commercial property owners like to know the boundaries, history, and any other information about the property that they can get, so commercial surveying goes into much more detail than residential surveying.

Commercial surveying is also generally more formal than residential surveying. Any recommendations or information regarding a commercial property can influence a wider variety of decisions than with residential properties due to how the commercial property will be used. A manager of a property that a hotel will be built on, for example, will want to know everything there is about other properties nearby and how they might influence the hotel property, which means that a more business-oriented approach is necessary for surveying a commercial property.
